Nic Cage's has "Taken" the opportunity in upcoming Stolen film

I know what your thinking... Why is Nicolas Cage making a Taken parody trailer? Truth is this is yet another bad idea from some one in Hollywood that said if it worked with Liam Neeson then it should work for Nic Cage right...I say wrong, its either that or who ever cut this trailer is stuck in the eightes. I'll wait and watch this flick in order to determine wether or not its legit, on dvd of course.

Films on my radar for Jan 2012

The Divide

This one is in here for two reasons...I love post apocolyptic/survival films and its nice to see Michael Biehn in a bigger budget film. Always interesting to see how people will change once they are placed in a survival situation especially when writers get creative. Personally, the unhappier the ending the better it is for these types of films.

Haywire

For this one I have to say...I rather see an actress that actually knows how to fight (Gina Carano) instead of sitting through an hour and a half of Angelina Jolie trying to be tough. The fact that Steven Soderbergh directs cannot hurt, plus they managed to fill in the gaps with almost all of Hollywood's leading actors.

Miss Bala

Gritty films like this deserve a shot of mainstream limelight. Drug cartels, money, murder, kidnapping and not to mention hot hispanic chicks, sounds like a recipe for success.

The Grey

Finally, I had to throw this cookie cutter Liam Neeson flick in here just because I admir this his work ethic. This guy puts movies out about as often as MTV releases reality shows. I'm not expecting a blockbuster but checking out Liam Neeson fight wolves can fill up a Tuesday night quite nicely. Just don't get this one confused with his recent films like Taken, The A-team, Unknown etc.

My dissection of the new Avengers trailer!

The new Avengers trailer starts out with what looks like to be a Micheal Bay-ish descruction of a city and people looking up in astonishing fear. You also get several shots of a somewhat assembled group of Avengers. The voice heard in the beginning is Loki, who is the main villian in the film just like he was in Thor. The trailer does not reveal much about how he happens to get to Earth but we know he can travel there by some means, which was also hinted in Thor. A couple of shots that stood out for me was Captain America and Tony Stark having a few words...This was smart of them to include simply becuase it foreshadows things to come between the two members. You also see Captain America fighting Thor of all people, which can either be a Skrull (shape shifting enemys of the Avengers) or something else entirley. Nick Fury with a bazooka, Black Widow tackling a henchmen, a possible Quinjet (Avengers' air transport) among other scenes seem to fill up the trailer pretty well but if you ask me, I still need to see more. Finally in the last scene we are blessed with a shot of Bruce Banner turning into the Hulk, in classic teaser form of a short scene cut. Being that the  Avengers will hit theaters unitl May of next year, leave us with alot of time to speculate, criticize and wait in anxiety for one of the most anticipated (the most anticipated movie in my opinion) films of 2012.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Rises to the top of 2011 films!

After all the movies I saw this summer, I have to honestly say I did not expect much from this particular release. In the beginning I asked myself why is the story taking place on Earth? Especially when the past films make a point in taking place on other planets. The trailer also pretty much gave away the whole premise for this movie, which any other time, I would say is a bad move. And not to mention the CGI apes which seemed like somewhat of a disconnect before even seeing the film, but actually turned out to be pretty damn good. This movie well done to the point that it keeps you interested despite of what you may know about the plot. The performances are solid from Andy Serkis who plays the ape named Caeser, James Franco also is believable as the genius scientist behind all the developments. Nods to the original Planet of the Apes was given in the form of quotes that include "It's a mad house!" and "Take your stinking paws off me, you damned dirty ape!" both made famous by Charlton Heston in the first film. The rhythm of the film is constant and leads to one of the smartest ending conclusions I've seen on screen in a long time. Pay attention to ties to the original film in the form of breaking news within the movie. Will there be another film to follow?...That depends on whether or not they get funding but this film can definitely stand on its own or breath life back into the story most of us got upset about with Tim Burtons 2001 remake of Planet of the Apes. Bottom line go see this movie, you will not be disappointed as will the fans of the original.

Cowboys & Aliens, Overhyped or Worth the Wait?

So where do we begin, if you have already seen the trailer for this flick, you know it pulls you in and makes you ask questions. I'll be honest I'm not really a fan of westerns besides the fact that I loved Tombstone and Young Guns. That being said seeing Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig on screen together seemed intriguing. Ford has been in some of the most iconic movies of our time, so when I first heard of the casting, I knew I had to see it. I mean with Favreau at the helm, Craig as the muscle (with a really cool bracelet gun I would have loved to have as a kid) and Ford with the experience...you can't go wrong, right? Let's not forget Sam Rockwell which is a always a good addition and last but not least the eye candy of Olivia Wilde. This film has all the ingredients of being a huge hit. I'm gonna go ahead and say I liked it even though some parts dragged and some plot points were questionable. But the action was great and the ending was well done for my taste. The aliens were stenciled copies of previous films but it was fun to see the "What if aliens attacked cowboys?" question brought to light. This film by no means takes my favorite movie award but is a good addition to the summer blockbusters, even though it was tied with the Smurfs at the box office. I say go check it out for Harrison Ford's presence and the rest of the well rounded cast.

Schwarzenegger's Comeback

Now that Arnold Schwarzennegger has been out of office for two months, rumors have been circulating about his return to film. Obvious possible comeback films could include another Predator film, Terminator or a True Lies 2 which was brought up in an interview with Entertainment Weekly in which Arnold says the following.

""The idea of a 'True Lies' sequel has been around since the early 2000s, but then 9/11 happened and we didn't do it because it had to do with a terrorist attack. A lot of terrorist-type scripts were cancelled back then, but now they are emerging again because there hasn't been a terrorist attack in the last 10 years. Then, of course, there's dialogue about me getting back into the Terminator thing. But you know, I've been out of office only two months now. I couldn't be thinking about doing 'Terminator 16' while I was still governor."

His comeback would have to be a good one, especially if he plans on being taken seriously again. His brief cameo in the Expendables felt a bit odd and pointless to me, but with a movie like that you can over analyze things. I would like to see him work with James Cameron again. What role would you like to see Arnold reprise?

Predators Review

More than twenty years later from the original Predator, Robert Rodriguez & Troublemaker Studios release the best follow up/reboot to the Predator films called Predators. In an earlier post, I was skeptic of the casting of Adrien Brody as the lead. But after watching the film, I feel that Adrien Brody gave a very solid performance. Hollywood has done this in the past as far as casting irregular actors as the lead protagonist, an example would be Michael Keaton as Batman. The film in it's fullness was entertaining and held the course as far as Predator related storyline goes. The second quarter of the film was a bit slow but it definitely picks up from there. I do have one complaint, the film neglected to show the Predator race holding back from killing an unarmed person, which is a signature trait. But given the circumstances of the movie it worked out anyway. The casting of the film worked very well, which included others like Danny Trejo, Laurence Fishburne, Alice Braga and Topher Grace, The film is well put together and the action is great. I'll be waiting on the next installment since this movie is a clear winner compared to the last two Predator based films. It was nice listening to the actual Predator score and the usual drumming in the background we loved from the original. Returning to the jungle also gives us that nostalgic feel from the first movie. Go see it in theater if you can!
